Last week, the students in Maestra Fuentes’ class at Adelante I Dual Language Academy participated in an Alebrije-making activity as a culmination of their informative essay writing module in Spanish and English. Alebrijes are vibrant Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures, originating in 1930s Mexico City with papier-mâché artist Pedro Linares after a fever dream where surreal hybrid animals called "alebrijes" appeared to him.
Students also did research and wrote a report on about their Alebrijes, describing the materials used, the animals that make up their Alebrije, and to whom it was dedicated. They also created a sketch/ illustration of it before constructing their 3D model of the Alebrije, utilizing a variety of materials. After constructing their Alebrije, students presented their project to the class and the audience got an opportunity to ask questions, share comments, and enjoy the creativity of their peers. In addition, an exhibition will take place in the classroom and parents will be invited to come and admire all of 5th grade’s beautiful Alebrijes.
