How to Hand Plane Long Veneer Joints for Perfect Seams

We have many ways to cut straight joints on veneers: routing, table saw ripping, jointer passes, and hand planing. Each can work well, but with long veneers that won’t lay flat, I prefer to press them between boards and hand plane them to final fit.
I initially ran these veneers through the jointer, but because of their length, width, and waviness, the best path to perfection was a well-tuned hand plane. The jointer left a slight crown in the seam, so I started removing material from the middle to create a slight concavity—a far easier condition to flatten.
This technique takes practice, but once learned, it’s straightforward. This joint, on highly figured curly maple, demanded an invisible glue line. And it delivered.
