This is part 2 of the 4L65-E Transmission Rebuild on this 2005 Pontiac GTO from one of you guys, my subscriber's, that wanted us to do the rebuild of his transmission.
Unfortunately Jr. didn't wanted to be on camera even though I wanted for him to share some installation tips, he wouldn't do it. Camera shy. On the Dodge video I got him by surprise, I should've done it on this one. Anyways, here's the video...Enjoy.
*Transmission Rebuild - Part 2*
*Overview:* This document summarizes a video transcript of a 4L65E automatic transmission rebuild, focusing on the initial steps. The video is aimed at DIY mechanics with some experience, showcasing both hand tool and shop press techniques.
*Key Ideas:*
*Detailed Procedures:* The video provides a step-by-step disassembly and reassembly process, emphasizing correct placement, orientation, and lubrication.
*Cleanliness and Inspection:* Cleanliness is critical, with parts and the case being meticulously cleaned and inspected for wear and damage.
*Specialized Tools:* The rebuild uses various tools, such as **bushing drivers**, snap ring pliers, and a **shop press**. The use of hand tools is demonstrated as substitutes when possible.
*Proper Lubrication:* *Assembly lube* is used consistently, with blue lube for rubber and green lube for washers and bearings.
*Bushing Attention:* Bushing installation and inspection are detailed, showing both pressing and hammering methods. There's discussion of differences between old and new bushing designs.
*Locktite Use:* *Loctite* is applied to secure parts, especially where sealing is essential, like shaft seals.
*Clearance Checks:* Proper clearances are emphasized, with a typical factory specification of 60 to 85 thousandths of an inch.
*Aftermarket Parts:* An "HD" (Heavy Duty) kit is used.
*Air Checks:* Air checks are performed to verify seal integrity and piston function.
*Potential Issues:* The video highlights potential problems like difficult access, seal damage, and tight bolts.
*Foot Press:* A foot press is used in several steps.
*Adjustments:* Adjustments are made such as shaving frictions and increasing valve body hole sizes.
*WD-40:* WD-40 is used for lubrication.
*Specific Components & Tasks:* The rebuild includes:
Intermediate piston
Low reverse spring
Extension housing bushing
Shaft seals
Snap rings
Forward, coast, and third clutch circuits
Input shaft
Stator bushings
Piston drums
Planetaries
Sun gears and sun shells
Frictions and steels
One-way clutches
Center support
Boost valve
Pressure regulator valve
Pump bushings
Front seal
Valve body gaskets
Accumulator pistons
Servo d-rings
Spacer plate
*Conclusion:* The transcript highlights the mechanical aspects and emphasizes the importance of technique, cleanliness, and attention to detail. The use of aftermarket parts, combined with adjustments to the valve body, suggests a performance-focused build. The mechanic's careful approach, combined with tool use and component examination, showcases a professional methodology for transmission work.
