Martinu - Sonatina - Clarinet Play-Along

This play-along video is Martinu's Sonatina, for Bb Clarinet and Piano.

This work has a special place in my heart. It was with this piece that Dr. Carl at UMKC realized that something was not quite right with me. Without going into too many details, she privately suggested that I visit the psychology department to ask to be interviewed for an ADD evaluation. I did and was diagnosed with ADD. That made a big difference in my life because it gave me insight into what I was dealing with when I sat down to practice or stood up to perform. It pointed me to tools that made all the difference.

Later, when I went back to Shenandoah University to begin my doctoral work with Dr. Johnston, I mentioned that experience, and he told me he had also thought something was getting in the way of my potential.

Delving further into comments made by my clarinet teachers over the years, prior to my work with Dr. Carl, Eddie Knakal, my teacher as I prepared to audition for Dr. Johnston as an undergraduate, told me that he always thought that I had more raw talent than Scott Andrews (whom he also taught and who is currently the principal clarinetist with the Saint Louis Symphony) but that I never seemed to reach my potential. (I should also mention that Eddie praised Scott for his work ethic. He ALWAYS brought his lesson material well-prepared.)
