We are reviving what was almost forgotten: Mijikenda cultural baptism, a sacred path, names, and identity. Before modernity, we had our own baptism—rooted in community, identity, and ancestors we know by name and who are still alive. When Christianity arrived, many forgot our own rite of passage. Today, we reconnect with the Mijikenda baptism where we carry names of our people—those we know, those who will shape us.
Filmed in Watamu in Malindi Sub-County by Sayari Arts Collective's Martin Kaona, narrated by Mzee Karisa Mwarandu and family, directed by Martin Kaona, edited by Kajembe Kandarima, Shee Wanjiru and Martin Kaona, this is Mijikenda identity, reborn.
