In this video I go through the basics of removing imperfections in a window on a Cirrus. Though easy to do a lot could go wrong and be extremely costly if mistakes are made. I feel the description in this video will be more thorough than the information on the video.
To start I always consult or talk through the process with the customer, mechanic, or director of maintenance for the aircraft before proceeding on a service as critical as this one.
To start out the window itself was damaged. The windscreen and two front side windows had been damaged from solvents being trapped under tape when aircraft was being re-painted. Additionally, there was overspray on the exterior and interior widows. Apparently the paint snuck behind the plastic and tape when being painted.
To start off I flushed the windows with filtered water mixed with American Detailers Garage "Wipeout". Unlike Aerosol aircraft window polishes, "wipeout" has surfactants in the solution that emulsfy the dirt, oil, and bugs on the acrylic therefore making them easier to remove scratch free. There is also polymers in the solution which help protect. Lastly the drying agent leaves a streak free shine in any weather. After the window is flushed of dust I will spray the window again to help remove any left over bugs with a dedicated window micro fiber towel.
On the exterior I taped all the edges of the widows. I covered the PRC bead as to prortect it from the buffer and polish. Some aircraft may have cracked PRC and the polish will get stuck in there and unsightly or you could make some of the PRC lose its bond over time possibly. Its debatable but I err on the side of caution.
I started with a Yellow Rupes pad on a Rupes Bigfoot 21MM. Using Rupes yellow polish I put some drops on the pad to prime it and polished the exterior widow. I polished to see what imperfections could be removed and whether or not I have to use more aggressive methods. The optical clarity improved but it did not remove some of the scratch and certainly not the solvent etchings. After this step I bumped up to a rupes blue wool pad and Menzerna 400 Heavy Cut Compound. To remove the scratches it took about 4 passes of witch I did a cross hatch pattern twice and cleaning the pad each time. I did all of the edges first and then did the large center section and overlapped all sections for consistency.
Next I sanded one small section by hand with 1.5k 3M sand paper with a foam block and some soapy water. I then sanded to 5K by hand all with 3M sand paper. The etched acrylic sanded out easily and a compounded out the area with the rupes blue wool pad paired up with Menzerna heavy cut compound. The Dual action buffers are the best in my opinion becuase by nature dual action buffers do not create as much heat as a rotary buffer.
Next step I polished the window with a yellow foam rupes pad and rupes polish. The clarity was phenomenal. I did two passes and cleaned the pad each time with compressed air to remove polish as to avoid build up. To finish up the exterior I used a white rupes pad with Menzerna Super finish plus and a couple passes.
I then pulled the tape and sprayed the window with wipeout and cleaned it with a new microfiber removing any residue left over.
On the interior the same process was done but everything had to be taped off and covered with plastic since the window was surrounded with suede. I had to use tape that was for delicate surfaces. I covered the panel and ovehead with plastic and draped plastic over my lap. I used the three inch rupes polisher with the same process as the exterior. I compounded the exterior edge first with the Rupes Ibrid. I compounded the inside twice because of overspray. I then followed up with the rest of the process from the exterior and called it a night. I had been up the night before coating a jet out of town and landed and came straight to this job. Partially why I didn't get all the footage and for that I apologize. I'll do an updated one in the future. All the interior prep made it easy to clean up. Pull the tape and plastic and wipe down the window with wipeout and a a fresh towel.
