Battle of Brody–Dubno (23–30 June 1941) | Eastern Front 1941
The Battle of Brody–Dubno, also known as the Battle of Brody or the Battle of Dubno, was one of the largest tank battles of World War II. Fought between the Soviet Red Army and the German Wehrmacht from 23 to 30 June 1941 in western Ukraine, it involved over 3,000 tanks and marked a crucial part of Operation Barbarossa—Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union.
Despite the Soviet Union’s numerical superiority in tanks, including the powerful T-34 and KV-1, poor coordination, lack of communication, and superior German tactics led to a devastating Soviet defeat. The Germans encircled and destroyed much of the Soviet 8th, 9th, 15th, 19th, and 22nd Mechanized Corps, opening the road toward Kiev and beyond.
This clash demonstrated the importance of strategy, mobility, and logistics over sheer numbers, shaping the course of the war on the Eastern Front.
