Willie Nelson - He Was a Friend of Mine (Cover)

My new cover song ‘He Was a Friend of Mine’. This is a traditional folk song with an unknown origin although the earliest known recording is by a musician called Smith Casey from 1939. He was an inmate at the time but I couldn’t find evidence that he recorded the track in prison so you can do your own research on that one. It was called ‘Shorty George’ and, to be honest, after giving it a listen, it doesn’t bare that much resemblance apart from a few lyrics. Still, it’s a good listen. The most popular version is probably that of Bob Dylan, recorded in 1961. Many well-known artists have covered the track including the Byrds and Dave van Ronk (who incorrectly credit the songwriting to Dylan). However, my favourite version of the song is by Willie Nelson and thus I have based my lyrics and fingerstyle on his 2005 recording. I really enjoyed learning this song and I really hope you enjoy my cover!
