Big Surprise: Hundreds of Helicopters and 3,000 US Troops Arrive in the Philippines
Thousands of U.S. Marines and Dozens of Helicopters from USS Iwo Jima Arrive on Allied Coast for Joint Exercise
In a powerful show of international strength and cooperation, thousands of U.S. Marines and dozens of aircraft from the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, arrived on Allied coast this week to begin a large-scale joint military exercise.
The U.S. Marines, part of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), disembarked from landing craft and helicopters to secure the beachhead as part of the exercise’s initial phase. The operation demonstrated the rapid-deployment capabilities of the U.S. Marine Corps and the interoperability between allied forces in complex amphibious and expeditionary environments.
The arrival included CH-53E Super Stallion, MV-22B Osprey, and AH-1Z Viper helicopters conducting aerial insertions and logistical support. From the deck of the USS Iwo Jima, dozens of aircraft lifted off in coordinated waves, while amphibious assault vehicles and landing craft brought personnel and equipment ashore.
