Subsidence affects tens of thousands of properties across the UK every year. Subsidence is where your home or structure moves due to an issue with the ground beneath the foundations. The ground changes for several reasons; commonly subsidence is caused by shrinking clay soil during a dry summer. The moisture is sucked out of the soil by thirsty tree roots which leads to the clay shrinking. This leads to the foundations sinking into the ground causing cracks in the walls inside and outside the property.
Subsidence can also be caused by leaking drains, whereby water washes away the soil beneath the foundation and causes the structure to move. Again this will be seen by diagonal cracks in brickwork or internal wall cracks.
