The starting point and the question to ask yourself is simple: Did I like it and would I rewatch it? From there, every question moves the movie up or keeps it in its place. The idea is to apply the same rules every time so ratings stay consistent and actually mean something.
Here’s how my rules work now:
⭐ 3 Stars – I liked it and would rewatch, but I don’t need to own it.
⭐ 2 Stars – I didn’t like it and won’t rewatch it.
⭐ 4 Stars – I liked it enough to WANT to buy it on physical media like Blu-ray or 4K.
⭐ 5 Stars – Only 10 movies can hold this spot. A new one has to replace an existing all-time favorite.
⭐ 1 Star – Reserved for the truly awful and rarely used.
Most people rate movies on gut feeling, and that’s why their stars are all over the place. I wanted a system that’s easy, consistent, and makes sense every time. This is my updated way of rating movies, and it might help you sharpen how you score yours too.
Do you have a rating system of your own? Share it in the comments. I’d love to compare how other people score their movies.
