In July 2022, Roman Oleksiv was waiting for a doctor’s appointment in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, when a missile strike claimed the lives of 28 people, including his mother. Roman suffered life-threatening burns. Thanks to Ukraine’s Medical Evacuation programme —supported by WHO and partner countries and co-funded through the European Union, —Roman was swiftly transported to Germany for specialist treatment.
He spent more than 100 days in intensive care and has undergone 35 surgeries and months of rehabilitation. Now 10-year-old Roman’s not just surviving, but thriving. His recovery is a testament to his spirit, and to what coordinated, cross-border emergency care can achieve.
