📌 What Is a Type Rating?
A type rating is special training that allows an aircraft maintenance engineer to work on one specific aircraft model.
Just like how a driver needs a different licence for a car, a bus, or a lorry — in aviation, you need the correct type rating to maintain an aircraft safely.
👉 Without a type rating, you cannot certify or release an aircraft after maintenance.
✈️ The Three Types of Type Ratings (EASA Part-66)
Under EASA Part-66, there are three levels of aircraft type training:
1️⃣ Level 1 — General Familiarisation
A simple overview of the aircraft.
You understand the basics — but you cannot do maintenance with this alone.
2️⃣ Level 2 — Aircraft Systems
You learn how the systems and components work.
Better knowledge, but still not enough to certify the aircraft.
3️⃣ Level 3 — Full Type Rating (B1/B2)
This is the real type rating.
You study detailed theory + practical training, and this level allows you to sign a Certificate of Release to Service (CRS).
When engineers say “I have a type rating”, they mean Level 3.
🎥 Why This Video Matters
If you're becoming an aircraft mechanic or planning to work in Europe under EASA, understanding type ratings is one of the most important parts of your career.
I explain everything in simple English so anyone — student, beginner, or professional — can understand clearly.
