SLPs have the expertise and training that make them uniquely suited to helping non-native speaking adult clients become more confident and capable communicators in their new language. Nevertheless, SLPs may need to bridge some gaps in order to provide highly effective, elective accent modification services. This often includes expanding awareness of the suprasegmental features of English that play a significant role in effective communication.
Features of English prosody such as intonation, phrasal stress, rate, and phrasing play an outsized role in the naturalness and intelligibility of non-native speech. SLPs working in accent modification would be well-advised to develop their skills related to the assessment and training of these features.
This presentation will outline the importance of these features, including key principles for assessing the prosody of non-native speaking clients. Participants will learn practical ideas to identify second-language prosody targets and develop training techniques to help clients expand their command of English prosody in order to communicate more clearly and naturally.
Course is offered for 0.15 ASHA CEUs – 1.5 Contact Hours.
