In this video, we trace the claimants to Rome's grandeur across centuries and continents. Beginning with Who Is the Heir to Rome?, we examine how post-Roman tribes like the Celts, Franks, and Merovingians wove Roman symbolism into their identities. As power shifted, new players emerged—Holy Roman Empire, Vatican, and Byzantium—each asserting their own Roman continuity through law, language, and faith. In the Balkans, rising Orthodox powers like Serbia, Latin Kingdoms, and Bulgaria adopted Roman-style titles and institutions. Later, during the Renaissance, Pretenders, Italy, and Iberia revived Rome’s image through art, lineage, and politics. Finally, in Russia, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottomans, we explore how new empires claimed the Roman torch into the early modern era.
