In this video I'll show you how I restored the look of some road trashed Koho Revolution (Senior model) goalie pads from the 1990's using acrylic craft paint to DYE the material.
This process requires patience and detail. It SHOULD NOT BE RUSHED.
What we're doing by watering down the paint is causing it to seep into the thickness of the synthetic (clarino/jenpro/durasoft) material. Because this material is made from a thicker backing material (very suede like) that has a skin on the surface...it's the skin layer that has worn off and exposed the under layer. We need the paint to soak into that backing material and then build up from there until we finally get a nice smooth finish on the surface.
If you simply paint a layer on top, it will quickly wear off from use and go back to not looking good at all. Since I use this process on gear I want to take back on the ice, my experience has lead me to this process I document in the video.
Best of luck...and remember, be PATIENT. Follow the steps outlined.
