In previous General Surgery lectures and videos on Lymphoedema – I and Lymphoedema – II, medical students learned about the pathophysiology of lymphoedema, lymphoedema pathology, and primary and secondary lymphedema.
Now, in this V-Learning™ session on Lymphoedema – III, we focus on its diagnosis and treatment by discussing various diagnostic techniques and surgical approaches.
▬ 🔬 Lymphoedema ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
A variety of routine tests are carried out for the diagnosis of lymphoedema. These tests include full blood count, liver and thyroid function tests, C-reactive proteins, chest radiography, ultrasound, and several others discussed in this medical video lecture.
Another diagnostic technique is lymphangiography, which provides detailed information about the spread of lymph vessels and lymph nodes in the body. This method requires an expert radiologist to perform it.
A normal lymphangiogram is presented first. Then, we explain the lymphangiogram of congenital hyperplasia, distal obliteration, proximal obliteration with distal hyperplasia, and proximal obliteration with distal obliteration. Following this, isotope lymphoscintigraphy is discussed, which is used to identify the severity of lymphoedema before and after treatment. Imaging through lympho-fluoroscopies is also helpful in studying the lymphatic system.
Once the diagnosis is complete, the next step is the treatment or management of lymphoedema, which includes pain relief medication, manual lymphatic drainage, multilayer lymphoedema bandaging, and compression garments. Additionally, some surgical approaches such as liposuction are considered.
Information is also provided on limb reduction procedures, including the Sistrunk, Homas, Thompson, and Charles procedures. All these procedures are made easy to understand for medical students in the General Surgery lecture video as well as in the General Surgery lecture notes.
