Starting a new job role can be highlighted as one of the most stressful events in life (Gilmore and Harding, 2021). The literature has identified that the process of learning about a new organisation, and being accepted by your new colleagues is not always straightforward. Steve Taylor – Lecturer in Business and Management presents a new model called the Hiplex-D model which helps to understand the great complexity of a newcomer’s situation. This model includes multiple levels of socialisation, including the under-represented extra-organisational level. The Hiplex-D socialisation model (High complexity dynamic) includes the dynamics of relationships – relationships are made one transaction at a time. The actions taken may be constrained particularly when starting off in a new job role.
