This is a flight I made in December 2014 from the Victoria International Airport (CYYJ) to Qualicum Beach (CAT4) for lunch at the Final Approach Restaurant with my father. It is a similar flight I made in 2013 but this time the wind was less of an issue and this time I recorded ATC.
The recorded ATC may be useful for anyone planning to fly in the Victoria area for the first time. Victoria is a little complicated with two tower frequencies and Clearance Delivery. This was my first solo flight from Victoria since last year so my radio calls are a little rusty and I became a bit mixed up when talking to Clearance Delivery treating them more like ground. But it may help you to anticipate what to expect and you can hear the radio calls of other planes and get a feel for how the ATC works there.
Low clouds over Nanaimo (CYCD) forced us to change our initial routing which was planned to be carried out at 6500 feet. Instead we flew around the Nanaimo control zone to the east at roughly 2000 feet to remain below the broken cloud layer.
The aircraft was a Cessna 172S C-GZXB hired from the Victoria Flying Club.
