Your browser's password manager is a popular tool for storing usernames and passwords from online accounts, but they are not immune to risks and vulnerabilities. You should be aware of and consider the following points:
Single Point of Failure:
Browser password managers often store all credentials in one place. If this is compromised, all stored passwords are at risk. This represents a single point of failure that should be avoided.
Phishing attacks:
Phishing attacks can lead to users revealing their login credentials on fake websites. Even if the password manager uses strong encryption, it cannot protect against such attacks targeting users.
Auto-fill function:
The auto-fill feature of password managers carries the risk of sensitive information being entered on unwanted websites. Malware or fraudulent websites could exploit this function.
Weak master passwords:
A weak master password can jeopardize the entire password database. Users must ensure that their master password is strong and unique to ensure protection.
Missing two-factor authentication:
Some browser password managers may not offer two-factor authentication. The lack of this extra layer of security could put accounts at risk, even if the password manager is secure.
To minimize the risks, users should be deliberate with their password managers. This means that only a few, harmless accounts are stored there. It also makes sense to regularly update the master password and use additional security functions such as two-factor authentication. As an alternative to a browser password manager, the use of a separate password manager should be considered.
