Enjoy a rare walk through an empty Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Palestine during the covid pandemic. Normally jammed with tourists, the quiet state of the church allows us to visit the traditional place of Jesus' birth at a leisurely pace. The church was just fully restored, including the Crusader-era paintings you will see on pillars and throughout other parts of the church.
The church was originally commissioned by Constantine who also built two churches in Jerusalem. It was later expanded by the emperor Justinian. The Crusaders renovated the church, and their first king Baldwin I was crowned here on Christmas Day 1100 CE.
We walk down into the grotto of the church where a silver star marks the traditional spot where Jesus was born. A nearby open area with a pillar marks the spot where his manger was set. We end the tour in the Catholic church of St. Catherine next door underneath which Saint Jerome is said to have translated the Latin Vulgate.
