Minimally Invasive Fibroid Treatment: Acessa & Sonata at UChicago Medicine with Dr. Edison | CATeR

The University of Chicago Medicine is one of the few medical centers in the country offering radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for fibroids, a minimally invasive approach to fibroid treatment. Two options, Acessa and Sonata, are available through the Center for the Advanced Treatment and Research (CATeR) of Uterine Fibroids for eligible patients seeking alternatives to major surgery.

These outpatient procedures use heat-based energy to shrink fibroids without removing the uterus, allowing for faster recovery and lower risk than traditional fibroid surgeries.


How Sonata Works:
Also known as transcervical fibroid ablation (TFA), Sonata is performed without any incisions. A device is inserted through the vagina into the uterus, where it uses radiofrequency energy to target and shrink fibroids. The procedure is done under general or regional anesthesia with conscious sedation. Typical recovery time: 2–3 days

How Acessa Works:
Also called laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation (Lap-RFA), Acessa involves two small abdominal incisions. A needle delivers heat energy to the fibroid, which is later naturally reabsorbed by the body. This is a uterus-sparing option performed under general anesthesia. Typical recovery time: about one week
