Waterfalls, waterfalls, and waterfalls. That is what the Middle Prong Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains has to offer. Lynn Camp Prong Cascades, Lynn Camp Falls (Upper and Lower), Indian Flats Falls, plus many more cascades. While still quite popular, the Tremont Area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park doesn't get quite the visitors as a lot of the other areas, but not because there is nothing to see or do. There are a LOT of waterfalls in the surrounding area, and the Middle Prong Trail brings you to several.
The trail itself is wide and an easy trek. Today's trail once carried lumber through the mountains along a rail line, hence the wide and nicely graded trail. Lynn Camp Prong Cascades is the first falls you reach at a benched overlook. At only .5 miles, this is an excellent hike for families with small kids up to this point. Just beyond these falls, are several more cascades with side trails that lead you to a better viewing spot. The trail never ventures far from the creek and there is plenty of opportunity for hikers to take a dip or rest their feet.
Just off-trail several miles up are remnants of time past - a 1920s or 1930s era Cadillac frame with other artifacts provides a nice stop along the way. Our final destination lies just ahead from this point.
When you reach a rock wall at a point where the main trail turns sharply left, head right on an unmaintained trail to reach Indian Flats Falls. Indian Flats Falls is a unique 4 tiered waterfall. The trail comes out just below the first tier. Hikers can see where others have continued on down to the other tiers. If you decide to go all the way to the bottom, there is a nice pool below the fourth tier that you must wade in to reach a decent viewing point of the whole falls, though that upper tier seems to disappear by this point. I tried getting good video and pictures by attaching my cameras to one of my trekking poles for a bit more height and still couldn't get what I was hoping for. But I was not disappointed in such. The easy hike to reach here is more than worth the effort.
