A couple of years ago, a few gents in the UK were making their own lamp oil adapters for the venerable UCO candle lantern. Since I’m not great at machining and want something that doesn’t leak, I looked around a little bit to see what was out there. A recent spark peaked my curiosity to check again and I ran across an item on Etsy, offered by a vendor named Goboseller. The shop offers a machined aluminum canister with seals, lid, wicks, and cap, and works well with paraffin lamp oil for getting around the melted candle wax mess that occurs when burning candles in a UCO lantern assembly.
When using candles, the wax gets into the bottom of the candle holding assembly, leaks out to the outer threads for holding the bottom into the lantern, and makes a mess and tricky time re-opening the assembly to put in new candles. Paraffin candles are bad enough, but beeswax candles are especially sticky, and the wax has to be melted out of the assembly to open it up sometimes if enough has settled into the nooks and crannies. The lamp oil adapter gets around this issue.
Pros: less mess. Drop in replacement for a candle.
Cons: assembly is pricier than a few candles. May not burn as long as the paraffin candles per fueling.
Overall, it’s a nice option to have along if you own a UCO candle lantern or a UCO Candelier heating lantern.
