During Black History Month, the Life Time Kids Academy had crafts that highlighted aspects of Black history. This craft focuses on jazz.
Jazz includes “bends” musical notes to create emotion in the music. Jazz bands can be unique in that they create rhythm from a wide variety of instruments. The rhythms can shift and change throughout the song. One of the most unique aspects of jazz is improvisation.
Miles Davis was an African-American trumpeter and composer who lived from 1926 to 1991. He is among one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz. Miles Davis used his trumpet to mimic the sound of a human voice which created a smoother and more emotional form of jazz music. This method, as well as other innovative techniques from Miles Davis contributed to the evolution of jazz. In the 1940’s, Davis collaborated with bandleader Bill Eckstine, alto sax musician Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie before starting up his own music group with Sonny Rollins and Art Blakey.
