Anthony Ray Hinton was convicted in nineteen eighty-six for the capital murders of John Davidson and Thomas Wayne Vason, two restaurant managers fatally shot during separate armed robberies in Birmingham, Alabama, in nineteen eighty-five. The prosecution's case rested almost entirely on ballistics testimony asserting that bullets recovered from both crime scenes matched a revolver found in Hinton's mother's home. Hinton maintained his innocence throughout three decades on Alabama's death row. In February two thousand and fourteen, the United States Supreme Court unanimously overturned his conviction, ruling that his trial attorney had provided constitutionally deficient legal representation. After the state conducted new ballistics examinations, forensic experts concluded they could not match the crime scene bullets to the revolver. On April third, two thousand and fifteen, after spending approximately thirty years in solitary confinement on death row, Hinton walked free when Jefferson County prosecutors dismissed all charges. He became the one hundred fifty-second person exonerated from death row in the United States since nineteen seventy-three.
