Heading out on Cedar Lake in mid-July looking for a mess of crappie. Trolling crankbaits and jigs. Covering water looking to find the larger crappie that tend to separate from the schools when it gets hot.
When the water heats up a lot of the crappie head to deeper water and the bigger fish separate from the schools. This trip I was trying to cover water and run into those larger crappies that were away from the other schools of crappie and off of the shallow trees. Target depth for this trip was 10ft to 15ft deep. Caught a good mix of crappie on the jigs and crankbaits. When the sun got high and it got hot the crappie shut down.
