Cellmate Chatter: Sigfredo Garcia's Drunken Confessions

FULL AUDIO INTERROGATION OF NOW-DEAD JAIL INFORMANT

Law Professor Daniel "Dan" Markel and his wife, Wendi Adelson, also a Law Professor at that time, went through a difficult divorce that concluded in the Summer of 2013. Not long thereafter, litigation among the exes continued, and, ultimately, ended when Wendi's ex, Dan Markel, was murdered, in July of 2014, by two hitmen from Miami - Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera.

It took almost two years for investigators of the Tallahassee Police Department and the FBI to figure out who were the hitmen (Sigfredo and Luis), and the woman (Katherine Magbanua) in the middle who helped the person or persons who wanted Dan Markel dead hire those hitmen, and feed them the necessary information. In April of 2022, almost eight years after the murder, Wendi Adelson's brother, Charlie Adelson, was also charged in the murder as the person who hired the trio.

Luis Rivera, the hitman who profited the least from the murder, who was facing the death penalty, turned State witness, and testified against Sigfredo and Katherine. Before a deal was brokered with him, the State had him give several proffers, and then the State investigated the information he provided. Luis was able to provide investigators with new information that they had not unearthed during their investigation, and then investigators were able to corroborate some of that evidence, which gave them confidence that Luis was telling the truth.

This jail informant, who has since passed away, provided information to the State that also corroborated Luis Rivera's testimony - even if the State chose not to use this witness.
