Origin: Introduced by Kenny Clarke and His 52nd Street Boys in 1946.

Style: Swing, taken at a wide variety of tempos.

Form: 12 Bar Major Blues

Key: Bb Major

Harmony/Overview: Straight ahead Major blues with a riff based melody and a II - V turnaround.

Recordings: The song originates from a Kenny Clarke/Fats Navarro composition entitled "Royal Roost", also sometimes referred to as "Rue Chaptal".  It was first recorded by Kenny Clarke and His 52nd Street Boys in 1946. Sonny Rollins later recorded the tune alongside John Coltrane in 1956 as "Tenor Madness", and since then this has come to be the most commonly used title.
