This Matt Gartska Drum Groove Broke My Brain

Matt Gartska of Animals as Leaders is probably one of the greatest progressive metal drummers of all time… a true GOAT. So I decided to try to learn one of his songs... well, part of one of his songs. While there are a lot of metal drummers that can hit hard and play fast, Matt brings a solid set of jazz chops to the genre, playing with an incredible amount of control, power, finesse, and precision. Trying to learn his linear groove from Ectogenesis was like playing a game of mental twister, and I didn’t even scratch the surface on playing all of his ghost notes or double pedal arrangements. That’s that next level shit. It was a fun, challenging, and frustrating experience, and I walked away from it feeling like a new pathway in my brain had indeed been unlocked…
