Just before her afternoon recording session for the Atrium Sessions, soprano Rhoslyn Jones would learn something that would change her life.
“I received some heartbreaking news that my grandmother had passed away. She had spent the year of quarantine in a care facility cut off from family and friends, and I was unable to travel to Canada to see her or the rest of my family.
“This news was, of course, very hard to process on a day when I needed to be mentally sharp and artistically vulnerable. I didn’t tell anyone on the recording set except for Matthew [Piatt], my dear friend and collaborative pianist.
“While we were recording ‘Der Mond Kommt Still Gegangen,’ I felt the presence of my grandma with me. She attended every musical performance of my childhood and supported me every step of the way. I felt her very clearly that day as a calming presence in the room just happily listening to this piece. It may sound spooky, but I very vividly felt her there for that piece, and then I felt her leave in peace. I love and miss her dearly.”
Rhoslyn and Matthew perform Clara Schumann’s 1844 song “Der Mond Kommt Still Gegangen” or “The Moon Rises Silently” as part of the Atrium Sessions. To learn more about the series, please visit: sfopera.com/atriumsessions #AtriumSessions
