Carbon County 1976 cold case solved — arrest shocks community
On a snowy December day in 1976, truck driver Tom Bradley pulled over near the Lehigh River in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. Scattered along the roadside were three black suitcases, broken open, revealing human remains. Police quickly realized the victim was a teenage girl—pregnant and brutally dismembered. For decades, she would be known only as “Beth Doe.”
Detectives John Marshall and Sarah Hennessey pursued every lead. The body was wrapped with a New York newspaper dated September 1976, and “WSR” was scrawled on her hand. Yet fingerprints, dental impressions, and even reconstructed facial sketches yielded no matches. The autopsy revealed strangulation, sexual assault, and deliberate mutilation, suggesting a deeply personal crime. Despite the community’s shock, the case grew cold.
The victim was buried in 1983 under a headstone reading: “Beth Doe, Unknown Female.” Carbon County lived in fear and sorrow, turning the unsolved case into local folklore. Each year, detectives revisited the files, but the girl remained nameless. Early DNA testing in the 1990s and 2000s offered little progress, and Beth Doe became a grim legend, her grave visited by strangers and students alike.
Meanwhile, in Jersey City, Julia Colon prayed nightly for her missing daughter, Evelyn. The 15-year-old had left home with her older boyfriend, Luis Sierra, after learning she was pregnant. Julia suspected tragedy, but police dismissed Evelyn as a runaway. For decades, Julia’s family carried the silence of her disappearance, setting a place for her at family dinners and hiring private investigators who found nothing.
Everything changed in 2019, when Evelyn’s nephew, Luis Colon Jr., uploaded his DNA to a genealogy database. In 2020, Detective Michael Torres in Carbon County received a match—Beth Doe was Evelyn Colon. After 44 years, the girl in the suitcases finally had her name back.
Attention turned to Luis Sierra, Evelyn’s boyfriend in 1976. Records showed he’d been the last to see her alive and had told police conflicting stories. In 2020, investigators tracked Sierra to Ozone Park, New York. At age 64, he was arrested for Evelyn’s murder. The community was stunned: the killer had lived freely for decades, hiding in plain sight.
But the path to justice was complicated. Prosecutors in Pennsylvania faced a major hurdle: Evelyn likely disappeared in New Jersey, while her remains were found in Pennsylvania. Defense attorneys argued that without proof of where the murder occurred, Pennsylvania had no jurisdiction. In 2025, the charges were reluctantly dismissed, with prosecutors urging New Jersey to take up the case.
Despite the legal setback, Evelyn’s family finally gained closure. Her grave was rededicated with a new stone: “Evelyn Colon, 1961–1976, Beloved Daughter and Sister.” A candlelit vigil by the Lehigh River turned the once-haunting crime scene into a place of remembrance.
For Julia, now elderly, the revelation brought peace. She had lived long enough to see Evelyn’s name restored and her story told. Justice in court had failed, but justice in truth had finally come. Evelyn was no longer “Beth Doe.” She was a daughter, a sister, and a memory preserved in love rather than fear.
