Gold Rush Legend Finally Gets His Dying Wish — After 145 Years

146 years ago, John Ah Choo — a humble Chinese prospector — died on Tasmania’s remote West Coast.
He was one of the first to discover payable gold here, working alongside Jack Brown on the plains that would bear Brown’s name. But when a new rush broke out nearby, John was cast out by other diggers — despite his generosity, his official papers, and years of toil.
His dying wish was simple:
“Bury me as an Englishman.”
In this video, we return to the wild bush where I believe John was laid to rest, and finally give him something he never had — a proper headstone made of Huon Pine, to weather the elements and honour his story.
