Myanmar, after showing some hopeful signs of democratic growth, has once again drifted into the muck and mire of autocracy, the kind that silences contrary voices and marginalises
minorities.
Poet and NGO founder Maung Saungkha is uniquely familiar with what happens when you fall afoul of Myanmar’s current censorship strictures. In 2016 he was sentenced to 6 months in jail for a poem he posted on Facebook about the country’s former president Thein Sein.
In this video Maung, a 2019 Human Rights Tulip winner, talks about his ordeal and what he is doing to push back against the censorial instincts of the Myanmar regime.
“I want real changes in our country,” he says.
The Human Rights Tulip is an annual award for individuals or organisations that promote human rights worldwide in innovative ways.
