Writer's cramp is a specific type of focal dystonia that affects your fingers, hand, or forearm. The brain sends incorrect information to the muscle causing involuntary, excessive muscle contractions leading to stiffness, tightness and pain in the hand while the patient tries to write. Such focal dystonia can occur in other cases also where people need to do repeated work like Musician's cramp, Barber's cramp and are collectively called Task Specific Dystonia.
