• Life Inside Prison Documentary | Locked Up...
In this video from our archive, we spent months inside a maximum-security adult prison that was the only prison in the state that housed kids sentenced as adults. Inside this cell block, called the Youth Incarcerated as Adults cellblock (YIA), kids under the age of 18 were all housed together in this 53-bed cell block. Because federal law mandates that kids be sight and sound separated from their adult counterparts in the prison, the kids ate in this cell block, had school in the cell block and had recreation in the area just outside the cell block door. As soon as kids turned 18, they were immediately transferred to the adult prison population, either at this 3,000 prisoner prison or one of the state's other adult prisons. In this video, we witnessed the everyday scenes that kids went through as they spent 24 hours a day inside this one cell block ... everything from preparing lunch meals inside the block, to hanging out in their cells, to talking to the female guards who were there from sun up to sun down.
