Narrated from alien perspective, the story centers on the dynamics between three tribes as they struggle to preserve their distinct identities.
The events in this story occur prior to those of Survivor, the third in the Patternist book series. It was written in 1970 at the Clarion Workshop, and sold to the author's friend and mentor Harlan Ellison for his unpublished anthology, The Last Dangerous Visions. It was posthumously published in Unexpected Stories in 2014, when Butler's agent announced that she had discovered two new unpublished stories.
