Join us for our 30th annual Holmer Lecture in Christianity and the Humanities with Dr. Jennifer Frey (Philosophy, University of Tulsa). This lecture is in partnership the Department of Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas.
Noted for her fascination with grotesque characters and the extremes of human nature, Flannery O'Connor is an often misunderstood writer. In this talk, Dr. Frey will argue that the key to unlocking the fiction of O'Connor is understanding her as a student of St. Thomas Aquinas. Using St. Thomas as our guide to understanding O'Connor, Frey will help us explore the relationship between art and truth, literature and theology, and wisdom and common sense. By tracing the movement of grace in her stories, we can begin to understand O'Connor on her own terms: as a woman who wrote "happy stories" thick with the promise of God's mercy and redemption.
