LIRR personnel in the LIRR's Garden City Signal and Communications Shop are rebuilding an Amtrak signal box for installation in one of the AMTRAK East River Tunnels flooded by Sandy. Amtrak's re-installation of the boxes will help to alleviate the crowded train conditions caused by reduced capacity in the East River tunnels. The work is scheduled to be completed before the Christmas holidays.
