He steps up at the party conference and in one of the greatest speeches in history takes on the powerful left wing of his party, with several of its most powerful members in the audience.
Francis Beckett journalist, playwright, author and former Labour Press Officer takes us through the dramatic scenes which ultimately led Mr Kinnock to take full control of his party.
Although he would not win an election himself, Beckett argues that Neil Kinnock's reforms ultimately led to a return to power under Tony Blair.
