Patching the stronger eye is a traditional and effective treatment for amblyopia (lazy eye) in children, encouraging use of the weaker eye and improving visual acuity. Studies indicate that patching for two hours daily, combined with near-vision activities, can be as effective as longer durations. However, compliance can be challenging due to discomfort and social stigma. Alternatives like atropine eye drops, which temporarily blur vision in the stronger eye, have shown similar effectiveness and may be more acceptable to some children. Early intervention, ideally before age seven, is crucial for optimal outcomes. In adults, traditional patching is generally less effective, but emerging therapies, including vision therapy and perceptual learning, offer potential benefits.
