ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Carlos Zapién is a musician, singer, pianist, cultural manager and composer. Born in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Carlos studied piano and organ at the Conservatorio de Las Rosas in Morelia, Michoacán. In 2004 he obtained a degree in music from the University of Oregon, where he studied piano with Victor Steinhardt and singing with Eric Mentzel. He later obtained a master'sdegree at the same university in 2006. He obtained the degree of Soloist at the University of Music and Performing Arts of Stuttgart, Germany, under the tutelage of tenor Francisco Araiza and soprano Dunja Vejzović.After several years performing in European opera houses, Carlos was named Artist in Residence at the Opera Studio of the Staatsoper Stuttgart, where he played various roles in Il Trovatore, Pinnochios Abenteuer, Le Nozze di Figaro and the vocally challenging character of Niko in Gegen die Wand, a production that won the Faust-Preis, a prize awarded by the German critics. He also created the role of Medea's son in the world premiere of Hans Thomalla's Fremd, where he collaborated with maestro Johannes Kalitzke.In collaboration with pianist and arranger Alexander Pashkov, Carlos Zapién recorded a bolero album entitled Siempre Mía. He recently proposed a new interpretation of the Gregorian chant in an album titled The Beauty of Gregorian Chant.
Born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Misael Barraza Diaz is one of the most outstanding Mexican guitarists of his generation. In 2014, Misael graduated with honors "Summa Cum Lude" from the Master in Guitar Alicante (Spain), a special program where Misael studied with world-class artists such as David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Ignacio Rodes, Paul O'dette, Hopkinson Smith, Fabio Zanon, Roberto Aussel and Shin Ichi Fukuda. Later that year, the artist obtained a second Master's degree from the University of Arizona (USA), where he now pursues the title of Doctor of Musical Arts under the tutelage of teacher Thomas Patterson, director of the Bolton Guitar Studies program.Misael has received ten first places in international competitions. He was also awarded first place in the XLIII National Contest for Classical Guitar Performers, Advanced Category (2018 - MEX), held in Paracho, Michoacán, one of the guitar events in Mexico with the longest history and tradition. During the summer of 2019, Misael was part of the prestigious European tour organized by EuroStrings, with a cast of artists made up only of guitarists who won first places in important competitions in Europe. During this tour, Misael appeared in Montenegro, the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Estonia, Italy, Spain and London.During his career at the University of Arizona, Misael has received various awards and honors for his academic and musical performance, such as the Music Advisory Board Graduate Distinguished Award (2020), Creative Achievement Award (2018), Steve Schulman Award (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020), Northern Trust Distinguished Graduate Student Award (2015), Honors Research Grant (2011), and the Medici Scholars Award (2010, 2011, 2012, 2018). In addition, the artist has won all in-house competitions at the University of Arizona, having been awarded twenty-one first prizes throughout his academic career there: Beeston Guitar Competition (7x), Sholin Guitar Competition (6x), Schaeffer Guitar Competition (4x), Wolfe Award Recital and the prestigious David Russell Bach Prize (3x), a contest dedicated purely to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and in honor of the maestro David Russell (2015, 2018 and 2020).
