In the early 1970s, Disney took on one of their most ambitious projects' to date - creating a surfing activity for guests. They spent $400,000 on a wave machine anchored on Beachcomber Island in the Seven Seas Lagoon. But after years of testing, maintenance, and ultimately many failures, the wave machine never worked as intended. It eroded away the beaches of the resorts, caused difficulties for passing boats, and was costing the company thousands of dollars on repairs.
And so, Disney left it abandoned, rotting in the lake. That is, until 1985 when Disney decided to test it one last time. And when it still didn't work, they removed the part that guests could see, but left the rest underwater, never to be removed.
This is the story of the Polynesian surfing machine.
