Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, and Lars Mikkelsen. Frankenstein brings back a legendary character of gothic horror in this new reinterpretation by the director of gems like The Shape of Water, Pacific Rim, and Pan's Labyrinth. And let me tell you, it was about time we saw the return of classic monster movies the way they should be, and that's coming from someone who loves The Mummy (2017). So I think this new take on Mary Shelley's work is a delight for those of us who are fans of classic horror.
The story is the one we all know: a brilliant doctor creates a new being using human remains. What could possibly go wrong? Well, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING! OH YEAH! No, but seriously, it's great to see del Toro's vision realized in this film, and I love how they tell the story from the point of view of Victor Frankenstein and the monster, very similar to Robert De Niro's Frankenstein. In fact, it has quite a few similarities to the latter, but obviously del Toro gave his version his unique touch, making it more like The Shape of Water and less like Bram Stoker's Dracula, if you know what I mean.
Visually, the film has impeccable cinematography and a dark-toned production design that creates a gloomy atmosphere, something seen in many of del Toro's productions. The costumes, sets, and monster design transport you to the era in which the story takes place, and I also love that they filmed on real locations, which gives the film an even more unique feel.
In conclusion, I wouldn't say that Guillermo del Toro's #Frankenstein is the definitive version of the character, but Jacob Elordi is definitely one of the best actors to have portrayed this monster, second only to Boris Karloff and Robert De Niro. And if you're a fan of horror and gothic literature (like me), I encourage you to check out this film, which is now available on Netflix.
