An innovative look at the way combustion, which is traditionally integral to energy conversion, can factor into manufacturing processes essential to energy storage and sustainability. This talk, by MIT MechE Assistant Professor Sili Deng, introduces flame-assisted spray pyrolysis technology and highlights its effectiveness in controlling the morphology and boosting the performance of LIB cathode materials, with advantages over traditional methods. It also addresses critical safety challenges –
like the thermal runaway phenomena, which can lead to dangerous battery fires – and presents the newly-developed Chemical Reaction Neural Network approach as a way to investigate the chemical complexities underlying such phenomena.
