The 49th Tall Ships Regatta, organized by the Russell Boating Club, took place on January 11, 2025, in the Bay of Islands. This annual event, established in 1976, has become a cherished tradition, attracting a diverse fleet of vessels and sailing enthusiasts.
This year’s regatta featured 45 registered vessels across three divisions: Tall Ships, Classic Invitation, and All Comers. The Tall Ships division showcased majestic monohull vessels over 30 feet with two or more masts, while the Classic Invitation division highlighted historic yachts, and the All Comers division welcomed a variety of sailing vessels.
The race commenced from the Russell wharf under clear skies and a light southerly breeze, providing ideal sailing conditions. Participants navigated courses ranging up to 15 nautical miles, depending on their division. Notable entries included the R. Tucker Thompson, a 60-foot gaff-rigged topsail schooner, and the Tokanui Sailing Trust’s waka hourua, a traditional double-hulled Māori sailing vessel, both adding unique charm to the event.
Post-race celebrations were held at the Russell Boating Club’s clubhouse, featuring a prize-giving ceremony, traditional hāngī feast, and live music, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere. The regatta continues to be a highlight of the Bay of Islands’ maritime calendar, celebrating sailing heritage and community spirit.
