The correlation coefficient (r) and slope (b) are both used as seismic attributes. We examine the relationship between these two regression line parameters. The comparison reveals that the slope is not an accurate approximation of the correlation coefficient. The absolute values of r and b are also examined. The absolute value of slope is another attribute used for structural interpretation. Absolute value terms have higher frequency content than the input signal but lack easily interpretable relationships to the signal and provide limited insight into stratigraphic variability. Both provide information about lateral structural discontinuity.
