Richard "Dick" Sawyer was born in New York. In 1942, after graduating high school, Sawyer joined the Army Air Corps. He was sent to Arizona for gunnery school. Thereafter he was sent to Sioux City, Iowa to be assigned to a crew and begin phase training. He was assigned to crew #2, 568th squadron, 390th Bomb Group, as the engineer and top turret gunner. After completing their phase training, the crew picked up a B-17 and flew it to Scotland. After landing they were transported by train to the air base at Framlingham, England. Sawyer and his crew completed 26 combat missions. But on their 27th mission their plane was shot down and they were forced to bail out. On 12/31/44 Sawyer was captured by German forces. During his interview, Sawyer provides an excellent description of his time as a POW in a German Stalag and liberation by Patton's tanks.
