Operation Pedestal was a Second World War British operation to carry supplies to the island of Malta via naval convoy (3-15 August 1942).
This island fortress was a major base for British attacks against German and Italian forces in North Africa, resulting in an Axis siege from 1940 to 1942.
Despite being a tactical defeat for the Allies due to major losses, the critical resupply of aviation fuel made the operation an overall strategic victory, by allowing Malta to continue the fight.
The Shrine is a living monument, a building with a soul. Throughout this closure period, we will continue to honour the service and sacrifice of Victorians.
