I spent that Saturday night drinking with a few friends at a bar downtown. We eventually scattered into different corners of the place, each talking to strangers, leaving me alone and increasingly irritated with the whole scene. I ordered one more drink, regretted it immediately, and decided to call an Uber home. The app showed a grey Toyota Camry.
Instead, what pulled up wasn’t even close.
An old, dark green Honda Accord—maybe a 2003—rolled up to the curb like something dragged out of a scrapyard. The paint was peeling in long strips, the interior lights were dead, and the whole car looked humid, neglected, and wrong.
I knocked on the window.
“Mike?”
The driver nodded without looking at me. He was wearing a dark hoodie, his face swallowed by the shadows of the parking lot. He didn’t greet me, didn’t say a word. He just popped the trunk.
